What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth which replaces a missing tooth and it functions as an real tooth.
Implants can fully replace your bridgework, denture or can more efficiently support your bridge or denture than any other method. You can either replace all missing teeth with dental implants, or replace them partially with implants, which can support bridges or a denture resulting in fixed or permanent teeth replacements which function and look like real teeth.
A dental implant consists of a titanium rod, which is placed into the jawbone. The titanium rod needs to be joined (osseointegration) with the jawbone and this takes from 2 to 3 months. On the top of the titanium rod there is a small titanium post called an abutement, which connects the dental implant to the crowns. During the bone integration (osseointegration) a temporary crown is often provided. After the jawbone has fully integrated with the implant, a crown, bridge or denture is attached onto the implant.
The most common reasons for having tooth implants are:
* the replacement of one, more or all missing teeth
* the replacement of full or partial denture
* to support a bridge
* to support a fixed denture
The advantages of dental implantation
* It is the closest theing to a real tooth.
* It has one of the highest success rates among dental restorations
* ensures comfort in feeling and appearance
* replaces your dentures so that you can eat, speak and smile well
* increases the chewing efficiency over denture or other tooth replacement
* replaces a single tooth avoiding the need to prepare the teeth to support a bridge
* lasts long and does not decay
tooth implant manufacturers
Some world leader or innovative manufacturers of dental implants are as follows:
- 3i (USA)
- Straumann (Switzerland)
- Branemark System (Sweden)
- Pitt-easy (Oralthronics)
- Ankylos (Germany)
- Nobel Biocare (USA)
How long does a dental implant last?
Dental Implants are guaranteed for 5 years, although they will most certainly last a lifetime.
Limitations
The primary limiting factor in implant therapy is the amount of bone available to support the implant in the lower or upper jaw. There are a number of tests to assess the amount of bone available, the most common being the use of digital OPG x-ray. If a patient does not have enough bone to support an implant, bone substitution (a bone graft or a sinus lift) can solve that problem.
Costs
Dental implantation is the most complex area of treatment in dentistry and that is why there is no simple answer for how much the total cost will be before the status assessment. The total cost depends on the solution you choose and the state of your current teeth. The total costs will include these main cost items as follows:
* bone substitution if the jawbone density is not sufficient
* the number of dental implants
* the final crown, bridge or denture
During the free consultation and x-rays you can discuss the treatment process and the possible alternatives with our implantologist.
teeth implantation in steps
1st visit: a) Status assessment and extraction if needed
During the 1st visit you will have a dental examination to determine whether the dental implant is the best option for you. You will have a panoramic digital OPG x-ray and several tests to make sure that the jawbone is healthy enough to carry the dental implant.
There are advertisements offering immediate implants, or one day implants, but be careful because most people are not suitable candidates for one day implants. It is relatively rare case when somebody fits with all the conditions needed to have one day implants. If you can have one day implants you will need a 2nd visit to the clinic to get the final crowns or bridges to the implants.
If you have had a tooth extracted at least 4 to 10 weeks earlier or you have missing teeth, or there is no tooth extraction needed, the implantation can usually start during your 1st visit.
If needed the dentist can extract the tooth. After the tooth extraction you will have to wait between 2 to 3 months for the gum to heal properly. During the healing period you will have a temporary tooth.
If your jawbone is not strong enough you will need a bone graft or sinus lift during your 1st visit. After bone grafting you will have to wait at least 6 months for the bone integration of the substituted bone. Tooth extraction and bone grafting can be done on the same visit.
b) Implantation and temporary crown fitted.
During this stage, the dentist will set the implant and you will get a temporary crown. This requires a small operation when the dentist makes incision in the gum in order to gain access to the jawbone. This is carried out under local anaesthesia and you will not feel any pain during the operation. The bone is prepared and the implant is inserted into the jawbone with high precision. Finally, the dentist stitches the gums, prescribes medication if necessary, and prepares the temporary crown. You may feel some discomfort during the week following the surgery. This is usually due to having stitches and the normal healing process. The implant needs to be integrated (osseointegration) with the bone after it has been placed, which takes at least 3-4 months in the lower jaw and 4-6 months in the upper jaw. You will need to stay at least 1 day.
2nd visit. Get the final crown, bridge or denture
The final stage takes 10 days and requires two visits. After the implant has gone through the bone integration period (osseointegration), which lasts at least from 3 to 6 months, you need to return to the clinic to place the final crown, bridge or denture onto the dental implants. During the visit the dentist will assess the bone integration and make the teeth impressions, which are taken to our dental laboratory to manufacture the final precision made crown, bridge or denture. 10 days later when the final crown, bridge or denture are ready, you have to visit the clinic again to place them on your dental implants. Some people stay around, some people split this stage up into 2 visits.
Are Dental Implants for you?
Anyone who is missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease or decay may be a candidate for dental implants. The main limitation is the amount of available bone. At your first consultation, your dentist will evaluate whether dental implants are a viable solution for you, and the best course of action.
Occasionally, older patients express concern that their age may prevent them from enjoying the benefits of dental implants. However, health is more of a determining factor than age.
If you're healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you're probably healthy enough to receive dental implants!
Most importantly, dental implants often improve quality of life in a very concrete way. People who have felt embarrassed and worried because of their tooth problems are often overwhelmed by what new permanent teeth can do for their self-esteem.But most importantly, dental implants often improve quality of life in a very concrete way.
