An inlay is similar to a filling and lies inside the cusp tips of the tooth. It is a dental restoration that is made outside of the mouth. Inlays are custom made to fit a prepared cavity and then cemented into place. It takes two visits to fit an inlay; on the first visit the old decay or filling is removed, the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken and a temporary sealant is placed on the tooth. A dental laboratory will then construct a custom made gold or porcelain inlay and it will be fitted at the second visit.
